Not Close Enough To God
From far I can hear his sonorous voice, a man of the cloth at the head of his flock.
With righteous speech and upstanding demeanor, I hear love and forgiveness, sin and redemption. I hear chapter and verse, and blessings and amens.
Soon however, I hear darkness and harsh judgement.
Yea, as the world is full of perennial sinners –and worse, unbelievers and non-tithers– fire and brimstone and the thrust of the sword, are the only remedy for these depraved souls. Everyone here should be a smiter, do the good work and rid us of evil.
Pained and bereft he preaches and beseeches, prodding the faithful to act on his words.
But before frothing up to this holy bidding, I offer these matters to consider about your man of the hour (and of many such considerations I give but a few): I’ve seen how he favors the deacon’s daughter, the baker’s wife, and the comely schoolteacher; even as his wife well favors the son of a lost lover. And I’ve seen how gifts for those in favor come about –by dipping a hand unseen into the tithing bin.
So before you start smiting on his behalf, perhaps you’d like to know, that this proud and pious man of the cloth, so beholden to his ministry, is indeed close to religion but not close enough to God.
A sin a day keeps the good thoughts at bay.
